Akshara Foundation collaborates and works in partnership with the Karnataka government, and the corporate and voluntary sectors. Its interest is in ensuring that all children, 3-11 years, attain elementary education. It works in 50 out of 100 Bangalore corporation wards; running balwadis and remedial education programmes. It supports 436 balwadi centres covering 7600 children, aged 3-5 years. Here, the teachers, picked from the community, conduct classes in their own homes with the aim of preparing the children for school. It also conducts the Jnana jyothi or the remedial education programme in 100 government schools, to help children from classes 2 4 who lag behind and need supplementary learning inputs during school hours. Teachers identify the children, and volunteers conduct classes in maths, english and environmental studies. More than 5000 children have benefited from this programme and have shown significant academic improvement. Akshara Foundation supports the governments Special Chinnara Angala (SCA) programme through its volunteers, aimed at improving enrolment. It has also collaborated with the Concerned for Working Children * to run four of the seven centres under the transit school programme. The programme is for working children under 14 years. In February 2003, it conducted a pilot study of the Reading City Programme which is designed to enhance a childs reading capability to a certain level. Thirty-four government primary schools were chosen covering 720 children. Due to its success, it plans to continue it during the academic year after school hours.
