Vanitha Seva Mandir runs Asha Deep, a day-care centre for mentally handicapped children in the age group 5-15 years. The centres 38 students are trained in social behaviour, basic everyday skills, arts and crafts. Those with moderate retardation are given academic instruction, and children above 10 are given vocational training such as making candles, wire-baskets and chalk-pieces. Vanitha Seva Mandir also runs a school for normal children in the same premises and so many of Asha Deep's activities are integrated with that school, such as the school assembly which is common for both. Vanitha Seva Mandir believes that such exposure will help the mentally handicapped integrate with the mainstream more easily. Three to four children with moderate retardation have been admitted to the normal school after a few years of training at Asha Deep. It also conducts computer classes once a week and provides free physiotherapy and speech therapy for its students. Asha Deep provides a van to transport the children to and from the centre.
