READ works in Chikkanayakanahalli taluk of Karnataka, and also in Tamil Nadu, in community development among dalits and tribals. It is involved in Community Business Development Initiatives to help start viable community businesses, community health and education, integrated child development activities, and sustainable development. It conducts non-formal education and vocational training for children above 14 years to send drop-outs back to school. In rural Bangalore, it works in seven government schools, conducting health awareness classes and education on human rights, with a special emphasis on the education of the girl child. It has also formed creative and skill education groups which teach children to make toys, puppets etc. It provides supplementary education, has helped form childrens clubs, childrens parliaments and courts, and a book bank of text-books.
