Sameeksha was started in 2000 as a school for children who had been asked to leave formal school or were unable to cope due to their 'learning disabilities'. It is intended as an alternative for such children; offering them personalised attention and a child-centred education. It recognises that some children have an uneven pattern of strengths and weaknesses in learning, performance, coordination/balance, attention and memory that need to be addressed. The child-centred curriculum at Sameeksha has been developed in-house to suit the needs of the children learning there. The primary emphasis is on building the children's self-confidence. In addition to language, science and maths, craft, art, drama, cooking and other such subjects are an integral part of this curriculum. Students graduate through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS, Govt of India) equivalent to class 10, at their own pace of learning. Children above the age of 10 enrolled at Sameeksha attend classes between 9 am till 2 pm, 5 days a week. The teacher student ratio is usually 1:4 though for older classes, it may increase upto (but never more than) 6 children in a class. The centre presently has 32 children with 2 full-time and 8 part-time staff. Sameeksha alumni are today completing their education at established colleges in Bangalore or are employed as confident individuals in various sectors.
